This thing is now signing me up to subscribe to mailing lists.

Also, our newsletters will probably go in the trash now, since everyones email will end up in the trash.

I rank this as the most vicious "virus" attack ever.

Yet another argument for confirmed subscription... :-< I know what you mean, ever since the forged e-mail aspect of virus started up I've gotten on some weird lists.

I came here today just because of the SoBig issue, I see I'm not the only one being hit.

I've been to mcafee to read up on it, but I don't really understand what it's doing. I just keep getting emails with the subject line matching the worm. I use a Mac, and it looks like it is a windows problem, but can anyone explain to me what's it trying to do? Am I getting emails from infected machines, or is there more to it than that?

Mostly no. the Symantec link gives a pretty thorough overview of what the worm attempts to do.
