FTP connections are slow

Something to do with reverse lookup?

Hi there,

A few months ago, when I was trying to update my Web site, I noticed that it was taking 10-20 seconds everytime I wanted to upload or download a file via FTP.

At the time, my hosting provider gleaned that it was something to do with (I think) a reverse-DNS issue with regards to my DSL provider, and so my hosting provider turned off reverse-lookups or something like that and then my FTP was nice and speedy again.

Now I'm using a new host, and unfortunately, I'm encountering the same problem again and the new host isn't able to figure out what's going on.

I'm generally pretty techy/geeky but I'm currently a bit lost myself on all this. Does anyone have any idea what may be going on and how I can help either my new hosting provider or my DSL provider (Earthlink) fix the situation?

Tried both. Slow either way. Very infuriating.
(I'm on virtual hosting, if that makes any difference).
