Good web hosting firms

for a small personal site

I am looking for your input on good web hosting companies to host my site. I will need to register my domain also. I do not anticpate a lot of traffic, but will have perl, php and other server side programming. Could use ASP if need be.

dvduval recommended Page-Zone or HostDepartment. Both look pretty good. Host will allow me to buy my domain also.

Appreciate your thoughts.

Any experience with either Host or Ipower would be helpful. I used a host that I wont mention here that was terrible. They only thing they cared about was billing me.

Man my mind is going crazy, there are so many choices and each one is a little bit different. Does it matter if I get a host that can register a domain for me?

Hostdepartment is looking good for me.

Does it matter if I take Red Hat or Windows?
ASP is not critical to me. The costs appear to be the same.

Based on my experience, I'd register the domain with one of the big registrars and not through your web host. I made that mistake last year with a new domain and then I switched hosts. It's easier just to keep all your domains in one or two places, though you may want to switch around hosts more often as pricing plans and your bandwidth requirements change.

In previous threads, many people have had positive experiences with with pair.net for hosting.

I have not had any problems with godaddy or dotster for domain name registration.

I'll second rtshosting.com... They do great for my personal domains.

I register all my domains directly through godaddy.com though. You always want to have 100% access and control over your domain registrations, and doing it yourself is the best way to be certain of that.

I third the motion that you should register your domain separately and godaddy.com is a great choice. For a personal Windows hosting, hosting department is a phenomenal deal. They do NOT have phone support but they do have live chat. I have had no problems with them, but I certainly wouldn't choose a "cheap host" if my livelihood depended it. Instead, I would choose pair or westhost or hostway when dependability and speed matters.

It is in Canada but seems to have a really good deal. Let me know what you think.
