Only 3% of my visitors stay a half hour or more and 70% stay less than 30 seconds. The average duration of visits is a little over 3 minutes. Seems like a disaster to me but I don't have any way to compare my stats with other sites.

Could some others share their stats?

Any ideas on how to be stickyer?

It does very much depend on the site - but an average would be in the region of 7 - 10 minutes.

The 30minute figures most probably represent people who browse to your site and leave the window open while they do something else!

have one site max staying time is 3 mins (get them in, give them what they want, get them out)

another site people seem to hang around for ages ;)

It depends on what the site is selling or doing, take WebmasterWorld I logged in 2-3weeks ago and the browser still hasn't closed.

That makes sense that the 1/2 hour and more visits may well be windows left open. I see I need to improve my stickyness. Any good ideas on that? Thanks everyone.

It depends on the country you're in. JICWEBS (joint industry council for web standards for the UK) will tell you that anything from 10-minutes to a month is an acceptable measurement for a single user session but to be honest the only people who can really tell you what is acceptable are your auditors. www.abce.org.uk are the ones I use in the UK.
