Was checking out SE's across the Internet today when, on HotBot, I came across this URL under what looked like my main entry:

www.onlinephotofix.com/bwphototop/redirect.php?url=http://www.MY-URL.com

Clicking on the link took me stright to my site which, obviously, is what was intended - but NOT using this particular link.

My .htaccess file prevents "hotlinking" to any content on my site. However, what I have here seems to be the opposite of what was intended in terms of "hotlinking"

What makes this set even more strange is that the item in the middle "/bwphototop/" is another site where there is a link referring to my site.

As far as I can construe, the above seems ILLEGAL.

To be frank, this has really blown me off the beach. Looking for any comments and suggests on offer. TIA

Looks like the site linking to you is using a 302 (Moved Temporarily) re-direct instead of 301 (Moved Permanently).

Search engines will quite correctly index the page under the URL that issued the 302, which is what seems to have happened.

If your URL is also in their index under its own merit then I can only presume that whatever ranking mechanism this engine uses has given more weight to the redirection URL than your actual URL.

thanks for the follow up.

Yes the SE in question is Inktomi via HotBot.

I'm not too sure about the 301's and 302's. Am a bit puzzled at how they would have achieved a 302 though.

What I have since found is that all in the links in the middle entity - bwphototop - have all the URL's written on its links page as as given above.

All this wouldn't have mattered much had that link had some other tag line and text attached to it - using their own blurb and whatever. As matters stand, the tag line and text in the result is exactly the same as if I had queried my own site elsewhere...

I can only presume that whatever ranking mechanism this engine uses has given more weight to the redirection URL than your actual URL.

That would be unique and one for the books.

Sounds like material for an 'how to' e-book:)

Actually, this is a good thing for a couple reasons.

  • Ink is keeping click-pop for your site. When they update, this helps your ranking.

  • If your site is PFI through needhits or positiontech, this redirect string is used for query tallies that can be helpful in SEO.
  •
