Is it possible to fake ones IP address.
For example, someone posts on a messagebaord. And they claim that the IP address displayed is not theirs. It jsut happens that it matches the IP address received from hotmail to deny the alligation.

Is there any way at all that somebody else could find out their IP address and change their own outgoign IP address?

Hmm. If you have the raw IP address, then I don't believe that this is possible.

However, my knowledge of IP hacking is very (very) limited and like Manuel... I know nothing.

However, it sounds like it can't be done.

HTH?!

I thought that there was some sort of software that picks out random IPA's and replaces yours. - I'm sure I've seen it in clickbank's store.

The simplest way to mask/fake your IP is by using a non-local proxy, at which point your request appears to be coming from the machine the proxy is on and not your machine.

There are ways to properly fake your IP but they are v. complex and into the realms of proper computer security discussions.

It's really hard to hijack a tcp connection or to fake an ip.
It's not hard to do with datagrams, but with tcp streams it's close to impossible (inless you are on the path between the server and the host you are trying to fake).

Instead, the software you saw searches for open proxies to abuse.

LOL oops...

The simplest way to mask/fake your IP is by using a non-local proxy, at which point your request appears to be coming from the machine the proxy is on and not your machine

Considering the proxy Im using at the moment is non local, and when I log into WebmasterWorld it shows me as guest from "proxy number" I should really have known that! lol.

Oh btw, I don't do this intentionally, it's just the way my uni routes all of it's i-net cnxns!

Sorry,
