Bargain Hosts

What's up with them?

A mate's site has been down for 9 days. I've got through to TS and they have sent the following email.

...There were some serious problems with the server. We have resolved majority of the issues. The server is on-line now but the c-panel software got corrupted., we are just waiting for Cpanel software to be re-installed . As soon as this is done everything will work fine. We will have this re-installed as fast as we can ( we have to be carefull as we do not want any data loss...

He's going mental - can anyone enlighten me as to how why the c-panel or cpanel gets corrupted and why you cannot just implement a back-up.

TIA

Rich

the honest truth of the matter is that many of these bargain hosts don't really know what they are doing. They have a box(es) at somewhere like rackshack and have cpanel installed to manage everything. If cpanel is working then all is well and good. If it breaks then you can see the three stooges trying to figure out what to do.

9 days? buddy should have his own backup and put the site up on a new host after the first day.

You generally get what you pay for. I never understand why businesses seek the cheapest web hosting they can find. Did they also seek out the cheapest rent for their physical office? Probably not. Location is a prime consideration in the physical world, and you pay extra for prime location. Hosting should be treated the same.

You have to be careful when going with a cheap host. If you have a small site that doesn't require much space, then sometimes going with a host like this is a good idea. For non-profit organizations I set up this one host that is $25 a year for 20MB and it includes the domain name. I have monitored these web sites for the past two years and they have excellent results. Some are good, some are bad, just be careful who you pick. (If you want more info on the one I set up for my clients, sticky mail me (it's really a good deal).)

My web-host went down this spring. Every day I would e-mail and get the same response ("so sorry. our techs are working hard to fix your problem")
After the responses stopped,(5-6) days I gave up and went elsewhere.
I would recommend everyone have a replacement host lined up beforehand, in case things get ugly.
Also-paying more doesn't guarantee quality or competance.

Also-paying more doesn't guarantee quality or competance.

This is very true in the hosting field - I have shelled out some bucks for stuff like "dual dedicated servers with geographic seperation" and have gotten worse support than with some of my virtual hosts.

I have yet to find one host that can meet all my needs. They ALL talk a good game, but when it comes down to it - few deliver reliably.

Some Australian Hosts that I deal with have no idea what there doing and they are probably one of the more expensive one I deal with there answeres come directly from a google search, without if trying to see what your problem is.

Thanks for the clarification Oilman

They have a box(es) at somewhere like rackshack and have cpanel installed to manage everything. If cpanel is working then all is well and good.

Looks like I can start a hosting company ;)
