Font corruption XP Pro

Everything in italics - traced to corrupt Times.ttf

Suddenly, out of the blue, all my MS programs started to display Times New Roman in italics. Simply turning off italics did nothing. Clicking bold made it simply into bold italics.

Have tried removing the font and replacing it with fresh.

Repairing IE6 and Office XP Pro.

Who the heck even knows how to repair fonts in XP Pro?

Have used TweakUi to repair the font folder just in case but this is not a folder problem.

Nothing in MS's knowledgebase.

Nothing in XP Pro help.

Makes web design, and using Office or Outlook Express almost impossible.

Anyone else come across this and what did you do? Would a registry hack work to make the prog forget the font, so I can then really install fresh? What would it be?

Other ideas - all ideas gratefully appreciated.

welcome to WebmasterWorld :)

I found this on a tech forum - might work for you:

System Restore might revert things back to how they were before.

To change the look of Window elements (From Help and Support)

Open Display in Control Panel.
On the Appearance tab, click Advanced.
In the Item list, click the element you want to change, such as Window, Menu, or Scrollbar, and then adjust the appropriate settings, such as color, font, or font size.
Click OK or Apply to save your changes.

To open Display, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.
Your changes are saved until you make further changes or choose a different theme.
Changing the look of individual items is only useful if you select Windows Classic in the Windows and buttons list on the Appearance tab. If you select a different option, the theme determines the appearance of your menus, fonts, icons, and other Window elements.
The Font area will be unavailable for elements in the Item list that do not display text.

Hi Oilman

Thanks for responding.

The problem is not the look of Windows. Imagine trying to type anything in Word and getting italics, imagine trying to read any web page and seeing italics. Imagine trying to design a web page and seeing nothing but italics.

EVERYTHING within the programs that use Times New Roman has turned to italics. And not even Microsoft have found me a way to repair it yet.

I think I am in for a wipe and reinstall and I feel angry about it.

Not necessarily so. Repair option might suffice as well (from the install CD).

Hi Stanbo,

Repair which program?

The Office XP repair didn't repair the problem.

The IE6 repair simply REMOVED IE6. I had to reinstall.

I cannot find where to repair XP Pro. If it's on the CD I couldn't find it.

What am I missing?

Thanks again for any light you can shed.

Just delete the font file and download it again.

Hi NCSUK

That is the first thing I did. In fact I also put the file on a floppy, booted up in safe mode, and copied the font over from the C> prompt to make sure nothing got in the way.

Is there any other way I could try to install the font? XP Pro believes the font is there even when it is deleted. And when it is there XP Pro can't see it. Having the font or removing it makes no difference. Microsoft programs list Times New Roman in the list, and it is really Times New Roman Italic.

Make sure you have set your default font to be Times New Roman and that it is not set as italic as default.

You boot from install CD and chose an option to repair XP rather than reinstall it. It's faster, does not require to wipe, and generally fixes the most problems :)
