I am trying to network/file share between my desktop (XP) and an old laptop (98). I ran the setup on XP and created the network start up disk. Installed in on the laptop, but it is not working. Do I need to install something else? Do I need to map the drive somehow? Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

It should actually work but sometimes it's buggy. I know.

Have you tried this (use it at your own risk):-
Run the setup on XP. Do the same on 98. Now in windows XP go to Network connections . Right click on Local Area Connection and select Properties. In General tab select Internet Protocol and click on Properties. The Obtain Ip address option would be selected by default. You go and select "Use the following IP address" and give the following Details :-

IP address : 10.0.0.1

Subnet mask : 255.255.255.0

Leave the default gateway blank or give the IP address of your ISP if you are connecting to net.

After this you go to 98 and network connections. Do the same things as in XP except for these details in "Use the following IP address" :-

IP address : 10.0.0.2

Subnet mask : 255.255.255.0

Default gateway : 10.0.0.1

This should work. If it does not then contact a Pro. And if it does work just let you know i accept CC :)

If I change the IP address won't I lost my internet connection? Maybe I am not stating what I am trying to do in the right way. All I know is I am lost, haha.

I have a desktop pc and a laptop running on a wireless network. Right now they only thing they "share" is the internet. I would like to "share" folders and the printer tha that my desktop is hooked up to (if possible).

The XP wizard for the desktop has worked, or so I think it has, but haven't been able to get anything to work on the laptop which is running 98.

Does that clear anything up?

Thanks

You are lacking the peer-to-peer networking piece, Westat. Is that XP Pro or Home? I think XP Home will prepare a disk that you can run in your 98 machine to set up file and print sharing.

XP Home is great for simple peer-to-peer network setup, but is a major pain to work with in a domain environment (e.g., business network).

If you can get both computers into the same workgroup, they'll be able to see each other and you can set up resources for sharing.

Rogerd

It is XP home, I created the network start up disk and installed it on the laptop. Do you know of a basic tutorial to help incase I am missing something basic.

Thanks

Hi Westat1,

I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago except xp was on the laptop and 98 the desktop, my internet connection shared ok but not the files or printers. I don't know which of these fixed it but I think it was one of them:

I used an invalid char in the computer name.
Firewall allowed the ics but not the file/printer sharing or it was mucking with the network wizard.
For some reason I had to run the xp network wizard on the 98 twice.
Finally I removed the ics, got the file and printer sharing working with firewalls disabled and then setup ics.

Can you ping either computer from the other? or themselves?
Can the computers find the other using the search?

You might try checking in the Microsoft forum, Westat. There's a greater density of Windows gurus there. Or, do what I do when I'm trying to answer a technical question - GoogleTM it. Faster than trying to find it in a manual...

XP home is a real pain to set networks up I've just installed XP Pro and it picked up all the PC on a network, including win2000, 98 & ME and I didn't have to do a thing

If you have a possibility to upgrade to Pro without too much investment - by all means do it. I bet it will resolve all the issues. If not, some woodoo shaman dancing (like what Glacai) indicated MIGHT do the trick... or might not. From my experience XP Home is a product for housewives (no offence meant), thus it is bound to have problems if you try to set up something that a housewife (no offence meant at all) will never think about :)

Found out I did have Pro. Something I did partially worked, now I see the laptop's shared folder. SO I think the desktop is working right, but not the laptop. Supposed to get an updated version of 98, which I hear will help.

Thanks for the help

Webstat1.. you must be having 2 Ethernet (Lan) cards.
Keep the settings for the card which connects to internet the same and change the settings for the card which is for wireless network.

There is only the wireless network card currently pluged in but there was a lan/ethernet card prior. I semi had it working, but then got an email from an "expert" (not from this site) and now it is not working.

Regardless Win 98 never saw the desktop, when I searched for computer, it found it but said it was not on.

UGH the saga continues

Probably not saying it right, but check out their web site www.netgear.com (product MA401).

I was told to use/install NetBEUI on both machines. Not really sure what that is, but will see if it works.

You need to disable both the cards and reenable them in order of priority.

Basically the one with the internet on it should be enabled first and the network adapter second.

If you want the internet to work you are now going to have to bridge the connections. If you have XP Home you cannot do this so you are going to have to go out and buy a hub.

NetBEUI = Network Bios Extended User Interface

You dont need it at all. If you are going to use it though

  • right click network connections on your desktop
  • right click the relevant connection
  • goto properties
  • open tci/ip properties
  • click advanced
  • click "enable netbios over tcpip"

    Save and exit.

That solves one problem, the only real way to fix the other thing is to bridge the connection otherwise your are screwed :(

Did more research and not using NetBios as you guys suggested not doing.

There is only one card, NETGEAR says it is possible but I will have problems because it is Win98 not Win98b

I have Norton firewall and systemworks running, would this prevent it from working?
