I am having a few problems:

I am unable to reach certain sites from my laptop at home, I am only aware of two sites at the moment that I have problems with and the are sitemeter (free stats site) and commission junction (affiliate site).

The problem isnt isolated to just IE6 its also in Opera, and also not just one ISP, it happens to all 4 dial up accounts that I have. When I am at work I have no problems at all with them.

But all I get now is Page can not be displayed. I ran ad-aware it found nothing at all, I had a look in techadvice.com and it didnt come up with anything.

Sounds like its something on my PC, could there be any software that conflicts with browsres in this way or anything else?

Does anyone have advice, please?

Just noticed commission junction has jsp-pages. Maybe it has something to do with that? Is your Laptop Java enabled?

Yeah I think it is, I will have to check that when I get home tonight though.

Any other ideas anyone?

Maybe your cookie settings or an entry in your hosts file?

Messed around with the cookies last night with no luck.

Maybe try typing in their IP address instead of their domain name to see if it's a DNS issue.

I forgot to mention what I done last night, when I try an IP look up with some little software that I have it cant find anything to do with the sites in question, it times out to the local host (my laptop)

Does that mean its a DNS problem with my laptop? I know its not with my ISP, I tried with four dial up providers all with the same problem.

Is it the homepage for both sites? Did you ever try to go directly to a deeper page?

<edit>Hmm, your last msg seems to suggest it has something to do with DNS. Try just pinging the pages. If that doesn't work, do try stretch's idea with the IP address</edit>

Did you check your hosts file? It could be that sitemeter and cj have entries in there for some reason.

Neither works I cant ping the pages or do a Whois look up for those sites.

What do you mean by hosts file, sorry showing my thick side now ;)

Hosts file is a text file than can over-ride DNS entries.

The file does not have a file extension so you need to choose to open in note pad - it's simply called 'hosts'. On Windows 2000 it's located in C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc and after all the commented stuff (the lines that begin with #) by default, it should have one entry only that reads:

127.0.0.1 localhost

See if there is anything else there.

Stretch, cheers mate :)

It was spyblocker, it had a 500k hosts file of its own in Windows that IE and Opera checked before it requested any site, if it was on the list then all I got was Page can not be diplayed

Once again thanks Stretch :)
