Google link question

hyperlink without (www)

Does anyone know why Google would index my homepage to my site without the (www). For instance, my (fictious) site is [www....] mywebsite.com however Google indexes it as [mywebsite.com....] I am curious why Google would drop the www from the URL and index it this way.

Maybe GoogleGuy knows the answer to this one.
Thanks to anyone with info on this.

Hi zender. Welcome to WebmasterWorld.

One of the reasons this can happen is because someone has linked to your site without the "www". Check your backlinks.

A site I am associated with can be reached by either .net or .com URLs. I set up loads of links to the .net address, but Google lists it as .com so I guess that Google must have followed a link with .com on it. I wonder if that harms the site ranking?
