Wildcard DNS

Has anyone one had any dealings with wildcard DNS. I have my own IP address setup, with my DNS operator providing a wildcard facility set up to point to the above IP address. Using my usual web address works fine. But add any characters after the www prefix and the site never appears despite the NSlookup facility showing the correct IP address.
Any ideas or what my hosting compant needs to set up

How you achieve it is going to be different on every os and practically every system. You'll have to ask them.
