I was wondering if my fellow friends can guide me through this one.

Press Release
I am looking at 2 possible options :

1) Use online services (that charges ~ US$ 149 and up)
2) Purchase software and send it myself (software cost is ~ 250)

However I am not sure how effective such software are and would appreciate if you guys can tell me about your experience and what worked and what not.

Thanks for the help.

No experience with the software, Needscripts, but a while back I used a service that (at the time) cost $99. It was a "new sites of the day" type of mailing, with a maximum of 5 sites. Results were fair - they claimed some gigantic number mailed, but I think it actually produced 50 - 100 visits. No direct press coverage, but it might have helped gain a contact or two in the ensuing months.

I'd guess the effectiveness of the software is HIGHLY dependent on list quality. I'd ask how they maintain and update their list, and how you (as a user) stay current.

The best thing for press coverage, IMO, is press coverage. If you can get picked up in one major paper or magazine, the herd instinct will kick in and you'll get a flurry of additional contacts. I wouldn't discourage you from a mass mailing or two, but I'd also try a rifle-shot approach at a few writers who are interested in your topic. Do personal e-mails, cite past articles you have enjoyed, etc.

I'd also be interested in hearing about the software solutions and their effectiveness.

NeedScripts, could you articulate a little what your goal is for your press release? Are you trying to get attention? Build brand awareness? Establish yourself? All of the above? None of the above?

Good questions, RBuzz.

I have to say that one of the most valuable services my wire service provides for me is editing. I've sent them releases that I think are pretty dang awesome, and their editors always do me the favor of making a few suggestions before things go out ... and I always have a better release because of it.

Your service sounds a lot better than the one I used, Hawkgirl. What kind of distribution options do they provide?

I am not sure if you can post the search term, and if not can someone please sticky me the search term you would use for such a company?
