Looking for a utility that will update many pages at once

An example would be if I kept the same table of links to outside news articles on every page of my site. I want to be able to change the content in that table once and have it reflect on every single page of the site (or whatever pages I specify).

I tried searching around for "automatic web site update" and the like but found nothing much. This must be a fairly popular utility but I have no idea what to call it.

So, can anyone recommend something to me? Thanks.

The trick is to have this table of links in some other file and then include it on all your pages. There are several ways to do this - PHP or SSI are two of the most popular.

This technique is often called "templating" or more generally, a "dynamic site".

The thread A dynamic site in 2 minutes - no special skills required [webmasterworld.com] may be of interest to you.

SSI are defintely a better content management tool. However if you are coming into an existing project where thats not an option I know homesite has a "replace in files" tool. Be very, very, very careful using it though it's really, really, really easy to mess something up. I had a ...umm.. friend, yea thats it a friend... inadvertantly mess up almost a 100 files he didn't mean too.
