how do I trace or find an ISP when all I have is an IP address? what I am looking for is the provider for some one that is running a game on an in home server surly they are going through a ISP and that is what I need to find out

The easiest way is just to use the ARIN lookup at www.arin.net. just poke in the ip address and it will show you who the netblock owner is.
