Im hoping to find some advice. Someone has stolen content from my site and is using it to promote theirs. Ive tried contacting all of their email addresses only to find trhem invalid. I tracked them through 'Whois' to find another 'company' that has a website, but all of those contact email addresses and phone numbers dont work either. IM wondering if theres another way to find their webhoster or some way to track them down to get shut down.

Thanks,

Todd Young

hey Todd - welcome to WebmasterWorld. :)

You should be able to track back to the hosting company based on the name server information. It's possible to fake all the information on whois but the nameserver info has to be accurate. That's the best place to start.

todd71,

Welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com]!

If you're on Windows, run ping and tracert in a DOS-prompt window. Enter the site's domain name or I address. Note the IP addresses and the host names in ping, and follow the traced route in tracert, looking for a recognizable hosting name a few hops above the site itself.

Also, try Sam Spade tools. You should be able to dig up their web host and file a complaint for stolen content AND false domain registration info. If the site is listed in Google, file a DMCA complaint with them, and they'll remove the site from their index.

Best,
Jim

you can also go drop the ip address into arin.net and get info on who actually has registered the IP block

todd71,

Your comment about the DNS leading to another falsified whois reminded me... If it turns out that they are self-hosted and/or doing their own DNS - as they could be if they have a DSL, ISDN, or T1 line, then report them to the ISP providing that connectivity.

Todd 71-

Good luck and nail them down hard. Such behavior is totally unacceptable.
