What I'm ideally looking for is a book with a philosophical approach to the field such as "The Practice of System and Network Administration" by Limoncelli and Hogan. This book is quite obviously for sysadmins and network admins, but I'm wondering if anyone has come across such a thing for webmasters.
I am not looking for a nuts and bolts book that teaches you a particular language or tool. I'm not looking for something that will teach me how to post my web pages, etc...
I have my own servers, operate a medium traffic site and am working on a medium scale portal type project. I need a book that addresses challenges such as namespace management for large sites, long term planning issues, traps and pitfalls that commonly catch young (though still technically competent) webmasters, scalability issues, etc... I don't have a senior webmaster to learn from so I'm looking for the next best thing.
I can't really nail down the specifics of what I'm looking for because I'm looking to learn stuff I don't know :) I'm hoping that someone's found a book or other reference that might cover this type of material. Please let me know if you know of such a thing.
Thanks,
Karmov
I have been browsing through this site for a week or so now. Again, it's yet another wonderful place to find answers to specific questions, but doesn't really offer the high-level start to finish thing that I'm looking for. Perhaps I'm asking for too much. I appologise for wasting anyone's time if I am asking for too much.
I agree with grahamstewart that the definitive resource is right here! It may not be in book format, but if you have a particular questions, you'll find not just one or two authors/experts, but a whole variety of them giving a different perspective to the solution.
I'm not entirely sure that you will find one book that is a definitive resource on all the areas you mentioned. You'll probably find that there are books on each issue - which seem to cover project management, technical architecture etc.
but I'm wondering if anyone has come across such a thing for webmasters.
Not me, but if there is such a book, I would question whether it would go into enough detail on each subject? There are so many different things to deal with as a webmaster: server, router and firewall architecture and maintanence; marketing; SEO; server side languages; database design and management; client side coding; project management; advertising.... to name but a few!
I know what it's like to want a book at hand to reference and look up answers to questions you may have! I still think that you've got your best all-round resource here!
