IE6.0 WinXP Saving pictures

Whenever I try to save a .jpg file through my WinXP IE 6.0 machine, it tries to save it as a .jpeg (instead of .jpg) file, so then when I go to browse for it in a program that filters .jpg, .bmp and .gif files, it wont show up...everytime I save I have to correct the extension given when it gives me the Save As... dialogue. I can go to my other machine and try to save the same exact picture, and it will save it as .jpg. I used to also be able to just retype the name I want, without the extension, and as long as the Type box was set to .jpg, it would add the .jpg extension, so all Id do is type filename and it would save it as filename.jpg...now it just saves it as filename with no extension (this is also true of .bmp files, but NOT ALWAYS (but yes, sometimes) .gif files). It is driving me crazy! Any suggestions?

My guess is it is your application, not XP. Are there any config settings for the application (What application is it?)

Its when I save images from webpages...like if I right click an image and select save image as... I get the Save As dialogue box that lets me browse to my directory and it gives you the default name (whatever the picture name is on the website), but it changes the extension to .jpeg. I have a webpage up that has screen shots of what I am talking about:

pctechguy,

This may be a "fight" between your image viewer and IE6 over which of them "owns" jpg- and jpeg-format files. You might want to try modifying the "open with" settings for these file types in the file type registration tab of Explorer (not Internet Explorer, Explorer). For windows, it's in Explorer->Tools->Folder Options->File Types; I'm not sure if this is true for XP.
