As a side effect, however, the law will lay out rules for spamming legally, clearing up legal uncertainty that has kept many businesses from sending unsolicited bulk e-mail.

Who wants to bet that this is the real impulse behind the bill? I'm a very skeptical person about this kind of legislation ever resolving the spam problem. And I DON'T want to see guidelines for legally filling my inbox with garbage.

The Internet Firms didn't want anything to do with government regulations, remember?

"Everything has changed, man."
"Information should be free, dude."

Now, that their spending huge amounts controlling spam, I'm sure they would simple love to have the government come in and regulate the internet, if it would save them money on spam-control.

>>>skeptical... about this kind of legislation ever resolving the spam problem

I agree. I get a lot of spam from china these days... .163.com, some others... won't do anything about them. So all a spammer has to do is move offshore and they stay in business. You know, I have this mental image of spammers taking over an island in the carribean. I might just join the enemy!

But seriously, I think it is just feel good legistation... I do not see it being effective- or being ABLE to be effective. We are talking about basic slimers, even lower than the people who call you during dinner over and over...

Well, I feel good about it.

If no one took any legislative action against unsolicited faxes, fax machines would be useless today. Why would anyone have machine, if it just spit out junk faxes all day long?
