META description tags

Why aren't they working?

I have META description tags on all my pages. For some reason SearchEngineWorld.com's Sim Spider isn't seeing them and Google isn't either. What's the deal with that?

My site is <snip>
A sample tag is as follows:
<meta name="description" content="This is the web site for Chris, Carri and Aubree Short. Site contains technology info, jokes, links, pictures, career info, a calendar of family events and other useful features." />

Google does not use meta description tags. Most major engines don't either. Same goes for the keywords tag.

I agree that generally Google does not use the Description, however, it does sometimes take the Meta Description into account. I have a few positions for a keyword combination where one keyword is in the Title and the other in the Description. Good for plurals and mispellings.

Not sue about the Spider Sim though.

....family events and other useful features." />

Could this -->/ be causing any problems?

You're right / <-- that is the cause of the problem. Too bad I can't remove it if I want my pages to be XHTML compliant.

So explain to me how Google gets the wonderful descriptions of sites if it doesn't use META tags.
