What's the best way to approach web hosts about coughing up the billing info on a domain?

The situation has come up several times where whois info was bogus. Some hosts will readily give you the billing info/owner of a domain without so much as a second glance, but others are much more stingy about it. Sometimes a simple letter from your attorney will get the required info, but not always.

I'd be very surprised if *any* hosts would cough up information on their clients.

Brett,

I have had luck with 2 hosts in the UK over the last 3 years, this has been when I have been trying to track down owners of a domain which Myself or a client has an interest in.

Apart from offering some backdoor $$$s, I think its quite hard work.

The Lawyers letter looks the best way forward in my opinion.

It is quite common for them to do it. This isn't the case of protecting the anon status of a user. It is finding someone to be held accountable for services rendered under their hosting accounts. If they don't give up a name, then they are the ones to be held responsible for problems.
