I use 1024 x 768.
How about you?

Am I right to assume that most people use 800 x 600? Is that your experience?

1152*864 on 19" - however, and perhaps more to the point, we now design for 1024*768 as opposed to 800*600.
We make sure that there's no horizontal scroll at 800*600, but we reckoned that about 6 months ago the majority (not by much, admittedly) of our viewers were at 1024 or above and now design accordingly.

1024x768, but my browser is 800x495.

Just don't assume that everybody keeps their browsers maximized.

1024x768 17" monitor.
I have helped several people in the last year set up their new machines. Most manufactures set the resolution of a 17" monitor from the factory at 800 x 600. Also checking local library and Internet cafe monitors, they all seem to be using 800 x 600.

I am at 1,024 x 768.

FYI, the counter dot com shows the breakdown as:

47% - 800 x 600
39% - 1,024 x 768

BrowserHawk dot com (a more technical crowd) shows:

56.5% - 1,024 x 768
17.9% - 800 x 600

gheos dot com shows:

55% - 1,024 x 768
43% - 800 x 600

It all depends on who you want to believe. Any way you look at it, however, 800 x 600 still has a large percentage of support, so I would be very hesitant to design anything that excludes them or requires them to scroll horizontally.

current user stats for my site
54% - 800
40% - 1024
1% - 640
2% - 1152
1% - 1280
1% - 1600

(I rounded that's where the missing 1% is)

I surf at 1024, but design at 800. Seems 800 is the norm for the masses, so I design with them in mind.

I'm at 1024x768. Most my sites stats show this above 800X600.

1024x768 on all machines. I also have gone into the advanced mode and changed Font Size Display to Larger which gives me 125% normal size or 120dpi.

I use 1024 on 17". The other day a lady friend of mine asked me to help her with some of the settings on her fairly new computer. She's not overly knowledgeable.

I changed the res from 800 X 600 to 1024 X 768 and she said, "Wow, that's an an improvement". She didn't know you could do it, and had just accepted what she had when the equipment was installed.

Makes you wonder if the manufacturers should rethink the default.

I believe the overall statistics show that 800x600 and 1024x768 are the two most popular browsing resolutions. Somewhere in the 40% range for both.

On a side note; I typically design for 760 max width for content. I've not yet taken the fluid route. Although I can make a fixed 760 look respectable. ;)

I've used fluid design on a few sites lately. Sometimes it takes a little tweaking to get it to fit 800x600 without scrolling. But its nice sometimes to fill up the page.

I was expecting to see 80% at 800 x 600 so I'm happy to see the higher resolutions going up a bit.

I just checked my logs to answer what it's like on our sites and here are the packages used on different domains:

awstats
wusage
webtrends
analog
webalizer

I couldn't find screen resolution on even one of them, although I seem to remember it being there before. So either I better get some coffee (or whiskey) quick or it's missing?

17" screen. Work is higher resolution than that, on a much larger screen, but I almost never maximize the browser there. I also have some sort of sidebar in every browser I use.

I hope they do. At this point, there's no reason not to. Virutally every graphics card and monitor sold can handle the 1024 x 768 resolution. Why not move up?

Probably more of a readability issue than anything else. Anytime I've assisted a client in changing from 800x600 to 1024x768, the first response from the client was "wow, the type is too small". There is one more step involved and that is through the advanced setup mode. In that dialog, you need to change the Font Display to larger for usability purposes.

There are many who find 1024x768 difficult to read. The manufacturers are covering themselves by using the 800x600 resolution and hoping that the user knows how to adjust for improved use of screen real estate if they so desire.

Remember, it wasn't long ago that we moved from 640x480 to 800x600. It takes a little time for the general public to catch up with us geeky types! ;)
