/_vti_bin/shtml.exe/_vti_rpc

I found this in my stats for a page requested once and also the one below:

/_vti_inf.html

Can anyone tell me what this is?

Those are Frontpage requests.

Could it be someone trying to hack into your site, and taking a punt that you are using FrontPage. In other words trying to exploit a possible weakness in your site's defences.

What do they actualy do though?

Why would they request the files?

>>/_vti_inf.html

>>In the HTML comments, this page contains configuration information that the FrontPage Explorer and FrontPage Editor need to communicate with the FrontPage server extensions installed on this web server. Do not delete this page.

This could just be someone trying to view your site with FP.

It was made in Notepad and the server doesn't have FP extensions either!

Yeah, but if someone clicks on "edit" using the FP icon in their browser which is installed by default the browser will make those requests.

Aren't those some classic 'Code Red' server scan calls?

Craig, I firmly believe in Occam's Razor. Pluralitas non est ponenda sine neccesitate

Often translated as, "the simplest explanation is the best" which is quite wrong, but fits best in this situation. ;)

I prefer: Billy Knows Best. Entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily.

Even Billy of Occam knew that a true kiss was better than groping in the dark...

I'll have to take your word on that of course ;)
