having some solid legal rules is probably smart

I found a short thread started by Brett about a year ago but not much other information on running a contest from a website.

What I had in mind is for a book author's site and she would give away one book a month (to help promotion). I'd like to limit entries to one person per month per mailing address (which is the only way I can think of restricting bogus multiple entries - you'd have to provide mailing address up front and can't change it later)

Are there some public domain legal clauses I can use? Shorter and sweeter the better, you know how most of us don't bother to read all of that, but I am sure it's a must to have... thanks for any help!

heh, like there would be any other SE I would check... ;)

didn't quite give me the results I had hoped for but you inspired me to search for other words in other ways, thanks!

contests seem like a really good way to increase traffic, I am surprised there is not more discussion, unless others have it down to a science (in which case, please share!)

I've done a couple contests but fortunatly I have a legal department that does the rules bit.

The best experience that I had was a big product launch - we setup a contest asking users questions - the answers where located on new content pages. It worked - it forced users to actually read about our new releases.

Impact on site? I saw a significant increase in return visits during the duration of the contest, increase leads coming in, and an increase in session length.
