What is Xanga?

Why a sudden burst of referrals?

Over the last hour or so, I've had 33 referrals from Xanga's home page. Never seen this site before. Had a look, and it seems to be a chat forum of personal websites. Can't find a trace of a reference to my site anywhere on it.

It's just curiosity on my part - and a little frustration, after failing to figure out how these referrals were being generated.

Not sure why the referrals might claim to be from the home page, but I believe Xanga is a weblog service like blogger.com or livejournal.com. I would guess someone's Xanga blog just made a link to your site - for some reason the specific source of the referral must be getting clipped.

Thanks for responding rjohara.

I too initially thought that it was the result of one of the member's pages containing a link. My stats show referrals as all coming from the Xanga home page and that is what worries me. Doesn't seem right.

The rate of referrals has slowed a little, but is still high enough to put it at the top of the list ahead of Google/Yahoo for last night's visits.

With new referrals still popping up steadily, you would think that the source of the link would be public enough for me to find it too. (I "joined" Xanga so I could look inside - Nothing. Grrrr!)

If these are legitimate referrals, I would like to cultivate the source and find others like it - the reach is on target for our market.

Sounds like log spamming. They write a bot that goes to sites and plants that as the referal to get webmasters to go back and sign-up to find out more information. I don't know if this is that but sounds suspect.

Xanga appears to be full of bandwidth thieves. They've latched onto the technique of SRC'ing images from other people's sites, and I suspect that's where these "referrals" are coming from.
