Ofcause you have done a good job when you get possitiv comments from the users, but when have you done a good job in internet terms, now I have over 400.000 unique visits a month is that enogh to say job well done, it cant be because we are all in different categories with different use of the net.

so when is the site a good job compared to the internet in general.

damn its hard explane in english.

Zeus,

I don't know if your involved in commercial or non-commercial sites, but if it is commercial then the simple truth is money and quantities of it.

There is a guy in California who started a news and information site from his small apartment in Hollywood. Guess he makes some money from placing one banner at the top of his black & white site.

VISITS:
004,726,005 IN PAST 24 HOURS
110,002,984 IN PAST 31 DAYS
1,027,346,092 IN PAST YEAR

It is a non-commercial site, but you are right if it was a site with sales the income will tell if you have done the job.

the last example I can see that over 400.000 visits is not enogh to say that I got a huge site.

I could maybe use this exaple Im realy good in football in my league, but if I went to the top league I would maybe be nothing or maybe become a player there.

I am quite pleased that on my main site my logs show favicon as number 3 most accessed file (behind css and javscript). It makes me feel appreciated - but someone will probably tell me I have just misinterpreted my logs.

To be able to judge how good you are, you need something to compare to.

I have recently had to generate a score table to show how well a site was doing. Clients want tangible results to gauge whether the money theyve spent on internet promotion is money well spent, ( must be a very common request)

can you put together a list of "like" sites and compare visitors by estimating your competitors traffic using there search engine rank positions as a guide.

i chucked in a marking system for the positions and added a few other variables that i thought were inportant to that type of site eg pages of relevant content,pr etc. you end up with a system of ranking sites based on what you think is important. Gives a kind of familiarity to all sites you design

gauging how well your site is doing on how much revenue is not an easy method as you have no way of estimating how well your competitors are doing unless you ask them.

i think 400,000 unique visits a month sounds very impressive but it might be poor compared to like websites. (i Doubt it though).

Im impressed anyway:)

I try to look at the size of my overall audience and then estimate how many of them are online. If you are getting a large percentage of those who are online, I'd say you are doing well no matter what the raw numbers are.

My site is in a very small informational niche. I get very little traffic but many of them are return visitors. I plan to capture the interest of the remaining hold-outs -- all 5 of them -- before the end of the year. ;)
