Hi,

I got approached to do a local band's web site.

They have CD after CD of live bar music that needs converted.

I am thinking the best way to go would be MP3 for quality and size.

Is this a safe assumption? If it is, does anybody have a preffered ripping program that they could recomend. I have never gone down this road and I am concerned for overall sound quality but file size is important also as main distribution is going to be the web. There are just buckloads of programs and I am unsure which to go with.

TIA,

Brian

mp3 would be a good choice. I would recommend using Audiograbber to rip and Lame encoder to encode to mp3. I think that they may come piggybacked together now, so it may be one download and one price.

you can suss it out by searching for "audiograbber" on google and it should be the top result.

Can't advise on the software, (not done any ripping for ages) but MP3 is the right way to go.

You can compress at different bit rates to get the quality/size balance right. There are alternatives, such as Ogg Vorbis, that may, or may not give better performance, but MP3 is more universally acceptable.

i am using program called mpeg suite for making mp3 and for making wav from mp3. i am not sure, this program uses encoders that you msut donwlaod (i am not sure if decoders vwere inculded). i use bladeenc dll encoder.

audiograbber is very good too, more easier.

ogg can give smaller size at the vit+rutally the same quality as mp3 and msot programs can play it.winamp can play it and most people use winamp. but to be toaly certain i would go with mp3.

I did/am still doing a site for a music group and used MusicMatch software to convert to mp3, it seemed pretty easy to use. They also only wanted partial mp3's, so people would still buy their cd's. I ended up downloading a free/shareware (don't remember which now) program to cut them up into pieces. It was called MP3 Trackmaker. I don't have any affiliation with them and it was over a year ago, I have v 1.3. It can be used along with winamp. You play the mp3 with winamp until you to get to the place you want to stop it, then you click pause, and click a 'grab winamp position' button on the trackmaker software. Works real well for me.

I've been using a program called CDEX. It's Freeware. Available from download.com...

It supports multiple encoders and multiple formats. MP3 is the most commonly used and suported by media players, both embeded and free standing. Also, most streaming players will stream it as easily as their own proprietary format (take that Real).

Good Luck.

I've used CDEX and it is a really good program for the price.

I'm just kinda stuck on my audiograbber now.

Thanks for all the help. I am thinking CDEX but MusicMatch also had some nice features.
