Today I received an email from a domain registration company asking how much for a text link from each of my pages.

My site is a small-scale search engine so at the top there is a search box with check boxes for "web", "directory", "stocks" etc. Each of the words is also a link to the specific section. For example if someone click on directory they are taken to my directory homepage on the other hand if one is checked (On any page) that's where the search will be carried out. What I have in mind is to add "domains" to this list and have the word domains link to their site and if they check the box have their search query the other sites domain search function. As a result of this their link will appear on every page on my site. The link will not be returned so it is not interlinking the two sites. Do you see any potential problems with this set-up?

They have also asked about what price I would charge. I have never sold any advertising before. MY site is a PR6 and gets quite a lot of traffic. From what I can gather they are not looking to gain PR but to get direct traffic. Any ideas on a monthly price for this?

I'm no linking expert but I don't see that being a problem.

As for how much to charge.

I would try to figure out how much it is worth to you and them. A link on every page should cost them a good dime and they approached you so I can only assume they see value in it.

Your call but it should be worth your while (expensive).

Hit em high and see if they balk. If they say yes right away it wasn't high enough. ;)

mack, do they have an affiliate program? If so, that would be the way to go.

They dont apear to have an affiliate program, From what I am seing they appear to be a fairly new company, I guess trying to get a few good inbound links. It's just dilema time trying to figure out a price.

I think a monthly fee would be a reasonable way to go about it. but having never sold ad space directly before it's a new ball game to me.

That's a tough call. I place a high value on both outbound and inbound links. I think a link on every page is somewhat unreasonable but that is just my opinion. I might shoot them back an email and let them start the process. Ask them what a link from every page of your site is worth to them. Of course they will lowball you, but at least it gives you a starting point for negotiation. ;)

good call P1

>>a link on every page is somewhat unreasonable

total agreement here. That's why if that is really what they want they can pay through the nose for it.

Ask them what it's worth and then triple it, I play dirty though.

"We thought x$"

"Really, I was thinking more of 3x$" :)

they offering a % on signups or anything or just straight cash?

Basicaly the email was just asking for a price for the text link and to reply if I was interested. I send them back a reply email saying what I would be prepared to do and if this was acceptable email me back and we can talk about price. I did add that, if it was to be a fixed link, then it really does have to be a monthly fee. because they are not only paying for the link but also for me to alter about 40 static pages and 12 templates. that drive a database section of the site.
