Weird DNS Problem

It's impossible but it's happening

Hi Guys,

I know quite abit about DNS and site hosting but I think the impossible is happening to me. I tried to FTP to my site this morning but it wouldn't connect to the server. I've pinged the server by name and it gave me the IP address back (DNS is therefore working), however, my pings time out (so the server must be down).

Here's the weird part. I can still surf my site. It's dynamic and cannot be cached because it is running the server side script fine. How can the server be down but my site still be accessed if it isn't cached

Answers on a post Card;)

It could be a number of things, ping may have been blocked at the router or firewall which would produce the effect you describe, i.e. ping fails but requests to port 80, 443, etc. are ok.

Your FTP server and HTTP server are two different animals completely. FTP can be down and the HTTP can be smoothly sailing. Time to submit a trouble report on your FTP server.

It seems to be my ISP. I have confirmed the ping is blocked but my hosting company have tested it on a dialup and everythings AOK.

Doh!
