Dual P450's or 1.2mhz (server questions)

I need some server advice -

I'm planning on running some sites with simple HTML and graphics. I've got an offer on a dedicated package that includes dual P450's or another that includes a 1.2 ghz. What difference does processor speed make on a server when you are dealing with minimal to no scripting/cgi actions,etc....

(Hope this is the correct forum)

Thanks!

I am unable to give you test results on this.

Suffice to say that unless you are doing loads of computational work (finite element analyisis etc) processor speed is not as important as you would think. Also are you playing games that would require super high HTZ rates?

I prefer to spend my cash on RAM as this will benefit you more (me anyhow). Also I would take a downgrade in speed for a larger monitor. Get a 19", you will never want to go back.

A 21" is even better! I thought my 19 was wickedly cool until I bought the 21 from eBay. Amazing.

About your processor issue, the post above is very true. RAM is your best investment unless your need the computational power. Straight HTML and images don't need any computational power. server side scripting takes more, and if you are running at DB as well you'll need more power. HTML pages are really only text files - very easy to serve.

If you are going to serve static html and images you might want to consider using a more lightweight http server than Apache. I donīt know the situation with Apache 2.x but there are a lot of servers available that need a lot less resources than Apache 1.3.

I agree with the RAM reccomendation. Not enough RAM and linux starts using swap, I call it "fake ram". I don't know exactly how it works, but real ram is much faster than swap.

Thanks! I might eventually be running a message board, link list, or small DB of sorts... I'd better just go with the 1.2
