Hence, I'm trying to understand the nuisances of hosting to determine what might work best. The most inexpensive seems to be name based virutal web hosting with a shared IP address, however, I've read several threads in this newsgroup that seem to suggest that this type of setup should be avoided?
So I'm interested to get a recommendation on what type of setup I'm looking for. I'm using Dreamweaver 4.0 for design, with only a small amount of flash on the root page. ALl of my pages are under 50K in size. Haven't made any adjustment to code except for adding tags and removing underlines from text links. I anticipate each site being under 50MB and estimate traffic to be 50,000 to 200,000 hits over the first year.
Finally, I know it's taboo to actually recommend hosting on this site but I definitely appreciate if anyone could send addresses of quality low cost host(s) to my direct mail.
Thanks so much
I'm interested in setting up hosting 10-20 different domains which would cross link and funnel back to the root. Originally, I thought that extensions of the subgroups of the root would suffice (www.widgets.com/bluewidgets.htm)
but sentiment in this newsgroup seems to be that breaking the site up into various domains and creating a "network" would be much more effective for PageRank and establishing more individuality on the various keyword searches?
Funny how different people reading the same things here might come up with entirely different interpretations... :)
What I meant to say is that the general consensus around the Google forum here seems to be that creating a network of cross-linked web sites primarily aimed at gaining PageRank can be a dangerous game because of the high risk of triggering a penalty from Google.
Of course, the risk depends largely on how (structure, content, presentation) your network is actually setup, but chances are you will come across different opinions anyway: some will tell you that breaking up a site in 10/20 keyword-based domains is highly recommended and a very effective marketing strategy; some others will tell you that what you are trying to do is just to build a "link farm" for which a short-term PR0 penalty is almost guaranteed.
In other words: the question is more complex than it might seem at first; there are so many variables involved that there is no absolute answer.
Please take some time to read back posts about "cross-linking" [google.com] in the Google forum and you will understand what I mean.
Hope this helped.
