A pop-up ad appeared on my computer that does not give me the option of deleting it. The whole ad is a link to the site. The icon on the bottom of my screen does not have the "x close" either. It says "Software Update - Microsoft Internet Explorer. It appeared when I went to Yahoo.com. This is an invasion of my home and a great deal of distress. Can anyone give some suggestions on what to do with this? I assume it will vanish once my computer is off, but what if it comes back the next time I go online? I don't want these people bothering me any more.

If it is just a pop up advert and you cant close it try doing ctrl alt delite to open the task manager and select it from the list of running windows and programs. click on end task :)

Ad Aware may be able to remove it, it's free too.

Did it, thank you. But still, this is a nuisance. Is there someone in charge of "Internet Ethics" that I can send a complaint to? I will post all your advice on my site just in case someone else is intruded upon.

Ctrl W closes windows in the order they opened.

porqpyn: I recommend sending a polite (but strongly worded) email to the company whose ad you couldn't close. They might surprise you with (a) a nice reply, and/or (b) changing the ad to make it close-able.

I know my company responds to complaints about our ads ... not everyone does, but I'd at least give them the benefit of the doubt.

A third method, if in Windows, is to bring up the focus on the window (e.g., by clicking on it's icon in the start menu) and then pressing ALT-F4 (default "Quit" command)

I've cooled off since my first post. I have to learn how to relax. I usually don't mind banners. I don't know how much income they provide the webmasters, but if I find a site I like I click the banners every so often.

porqpyn raised a good question. Just who is in charge of the internet. :)

Just who is in charge of the internet.

A far easier question would be...
"what is the meaning of life?"

I already know that - for me, it's to make money faster than my wife and kids can spend it. :)
