Competative Keywords

What do you consider in terms of numbers?

Hello everyone

I was wondering what exactly folks here consider a "competative" keyword or phrase to be.
When I do a search for our most prominant kw,I get some of the following results:
Google 51,900 SERps
Yahoo 36,400
Altavista 15,445

Is this how you go about finding this information?
Can anyone suggest alternative method?

Thanks as always,Duhboy.

sheer number of results says next to nothing.
A start would be to check for highest bids at PPC engines.
But really you'd have to analyse the top ranking sites for any given term: Are they done by professionals, are top rankings owned by some huge players, is money to be made etc.

Hi duhboy,

One of my keyword sets.

google

2050,000 key1 ___ _____ ppc £2.85
415,000 key1 key2 ____ ppc £3.88
146,000 key3 key1 key2 ppc £4.15

The three keyword phrase gets the quality traffic with high yield sales.

The single keyword is really a catch all with a low sales return
