We have a couple of ssl certificates coming up for renewal with thawte. Has anybody used an alternative to verisign/thawte? How was the installation process? pricing?

Hmmmph, the guy we use for SSL provision switched away from Thawte to lower costs a bit. After numerous client complaints, 3 attempts at reinstalling the damn thing so it didn't throw up security alerts, and more time making placatory phone calls than I care to think about, we collectively decided to return to the fold.

I'm sure lots of people have had better experiences with other providers, but we got burnt

just to update.... we are renewing with thawte now and one of our sites is down! They have a new site with an automated renewal process and it is very buggy with dead links and all. Anyway, last week we had paid for the renewal with a credit card - the web based automated renewal system doesn't seem to know this so it won't issue the certificate! Their online real time support people see the problem but only "Roland" can fix it - guess what? Roland isn't answering his emails or his phone...

seems like we are seeing the same level of poor service from verisign/thawte that we have come to expect from verisign/network solutions!

things are just getting worse...we charged our credit card a second time to eliminate the payment issue - now the gives us a general error - still no call from Roland - we are 4 hours into this!

damage control, we got rid of all of the https links and at least the site works again - albeit with no secure cert.

anybody interested in starting a new ssl company?

With Windows 2000 you can create your own certificates. You can become your own certificate authority. I can give you certificates, you can give me certificates. Perfectly legal and then you could use SSL.
