I plan to close down 5 websites and redirect the URL's to my main website. Although the procedure is easy, does anyone have suggesstions from experience they would like to share.

The main thing you may notice is that you won't be able to change all of the inbound links pointing to your defunct sites. It will take ages for the rest of the web to catch up and update their links.

dont ask people linking to your domains that are being redirected to update the links to your new domain. the 301 redirects will move the juice over to your domain quite happily. updating the links will cause google to treat the link as a new link with all of the ageing filters that implies.

If the existing sites already have a lot of links to them you might do better to leave the sites up (if they don't require maintenance) and try to use them to drive traffic to your main site by having prominent links to your main site on them.
