Build Website for Clients of Build Website for Yourself?

When does building sites for clients become more of a bother than a help?

Please, I don’t care how much money you make - I want to know if you’re paid through clients or through your own creations (or if you can magically juggle both).

I’ve been doing work for clients while my own projects take a back seat. I can’t really complain because the money is decent and it’s always nice to see a check in the mail. The problem arises when I get these great ideas of my own but seldom can find the time to put any quality work into them.

I’ve tried to minimize work for others to make room for my own stuff but anyone who’s ever built websites for the public knows that approach is a pipedream.

So.... To all of you uber-webmasters out there.... Where’s most of your time spent – working on your own projects, or working on client sites?

I think a smart time-plan is needed

i work 99% on my own projects, i have 2 historic clients who were good enough to give me work when i started out and who i remain loyal to with regards to updates and the occasional tweak to their sites as reqired.

... otherwise i turn down all work, it's not a money thing, i have found that i'm not suited to having clients!
