Server Downtime!

How much would be considered within the range of "normal"?

My page is hosted on a server in Brazil (where I live). In the past month the page has been off the air for six hours or so -- four hours several weeks ago, and a couple of hours now. While I sit here gnashing my teeth and cursing I thought it would be a good idea to see what is considered average in this respect.

Alot of ISP's give a 99% guarantee up time !

That is still 3.5 days downtime in any year.

Well if I counted on my fingers correctly, that's about seven hours a month of downtime! That's right where I'm at! Is that really considered acceptable in the developed world?!

Actually, Westhost, which hosts WebmasterWorld, says 99.9% uptime - I think that is a more common guarantee - just a few hours a year of predicted downtime. Earthlink says "Almost 100% uptime."

I think you can do better than 7 hours down in a month - unless there were some really unique events taking your host offline.
