Technology gets cheaper but my hosting bill stays the same

I've had a dedicated server with <snip> for 2 or 3 years now and I've been paying $100/month the entire time. Should I ask them to lower my bill or should I shop around for a better deal and then transfer the server data over there?

You should always be on the lookout for a good deal, but when you pay for hosting it's never the technology you pay for, it's the support. Although hosting is priced according to things like bandwidth, hardware and software requirements, it's really about how much support you are likely to need.

One thing I have noticed is that with my host things like bandwidth and webspace have become cheaper, and I get more of it included in my account than when I started out. I think this has something to do with the fact that more people have broadband, so the average webmaster gets through more space/bandwidth etc. It's not that those things are necessarily any cheaper, although they may be. The cost of technology is just negligible compared to the cost of hiring people to manage it and field support calls.

$100 is quite a good deal!
I pay about $350 and yes support and reliability are major factor in pricing

But when I choose the type of CPU etc. I want from my host, the price per month changes to reflect that hardware. I'm sure if I were to order a new dedicated server from my host for $100 a month right now, I'd be getting a lot faster hardware. That's what I'm talking about.

Yes and not
Yes: you might indeed get a few more toys for your investment.
No: At a certain level not many other ISP can beat or equal such a support like support from this site host - possibly one or two match it but there are no one doing better (as far as I know)
I truly think that up to $200 your statement is true.
Above $200 you need to factor in many more input.
