What technical features should a good hosting account have?

You know, the technical features like .htaccess, mod_rewrite, etc.

Again, it's the technical features like .htaccess, mod_rewrite, etc. -- rather than "X amount of space and bandwith" or monthly cost that I'm looking for.

BTW, in keeping with Webmasterworld TOS, please don't mention any specific host by name -- just the technical features you would want for yourself or for a family member who was both looking for a new host and who wanted to grow into a serious affiliate or adsense person.

I believe a dedicated server is the only answer to this problem. Total access is the only real solution.

In the early years I used shared environments, they are a nightmare. All you need is one bad neighbor who keeps crashing the machine with poor scripting to make you understand why you need to run a "serious" business, of any type, on your own box.

There is always an element of luck with shared hosting, you might share a box with good neighbors for a while. But, the day a bad neighbor arrives on the street they will make your life a misery. Serious businesses should not rely on luck ;)

Dedicated is now so cheap that doing anything else to me seems pointless for any serious business.

For anyone who worries about the technical aspects of running a dedicated server, then I would suggest a provider with excellent support facilities. It may cost 30%-40% more than a "basic box" provider, but, will be worth every penny to a business that relies on reliability of service.

Hi percentages (and everyone else, too),

I agree with you that it's best to have one's own server.

So...if one does get their own server the same question pretty much applies; albeit via a dedicated instead of shared hosting setup....

...what technical features should a good hosting account have -- and thus are on the priority list of skills to master for someone who wants to grow into a serious affiliate or adsense person?
