But look, it is in the right place. It's an authority hub and much of the content on there is excellent. I use it all the time. It's not spam - it's a high quality resource.
Anyway, on with the story...
I'd been working on a site for a friend (a good quality informational site but with an eCommerce backend) where Wikipedia is #1 for his main target keyphrase. So I went and posted a link to his widgets site right on their widgets page. It got nuked within an hour (that was expected). "OK Wikipedia", I thought, "you passed the moderation test. That's a good thing.".
So I spent a little time and created his very own page on Wikipedia dedicated to his widgets site. It was very objective, very factual and explained exactly what it is that he does with widgets. It's titled as per his corporate name and there's nothing whatsoever spammy about it. I put a link to his "official site" under "External Links" with the anchor text "Official Site". Simple. Plain. Unobtrusive.
I then went back to the main widgets page and linked to this new Wikipedia page hoping that it would stick this time and considering that if it didn't, time to move on and look at other sources of traffic.
That was 3/4 weeks ago, and his link is not only still in place, but a moderator has moved it up the page and into the content of the main widgets page, right in the first paragraph. Nice.
Traffic? Average 90 referrals a day.
"But that's not many TJ!", I hear you all cry.
Yeah, but they're all converting...
It's good quality traffic. Tap it.
TJ
I don't respect it. I don't like it. And it's not a charity.
What do you base this upon, did they delete your link too? ;)
I use Wikipedia and I have contributed on several occasions but I would not consider contributing if I was not sure about what I was talking about ... for example first hand local information. I think that most contributors are like this.
I appreciate that some people may may upload BS but in my experience it is very closely moderated so you have to respect them for that. I am quite confident that I can separate the wheat from the chaff and I would also be more inclined to believe what I read in Wikipedia before some ad laden MFA website.
