I'm a web designer setting up a server tp host multiple SME domains and would like to know what server-side SEO improvements exist (and why are they improvements). Also, is it important to have separate IP addresses?

Any thoughts guys, or where should I look for these answers?

I'd never host a site on a shared ip. Brett seems to agree [google.com]

I'm not sure I'd worry about server-side SEO stuff unless you are building and offering a particularly SEO-friendly CMS.

The search engine bots only see the client-side stuff. Get that right first.

Re: shared IP.

The thread you link to is more than 4 years old. I am quite convinced that Google nowadays has other ways of detecting "solid" sites then the "shared IP" criterium.

I admittedly have no solid proof of this, but I must say that the point is nowadays at least doubtful.

the point is nowadays at least doubtful.

Most SE "art" is based on supposition:-

Q : Would you expect www.cnn.com to on a shared IP with www.bobs-wonderful-widgets.net?

I am quite convinced that Google nowadays has other ways of detecting "solid" sites then the "shared IP" criterium.

I believe that you are absolutely correct in that supposition. However, there are some for who squeezing every last drop of benefit is important (whether it's a known fact or supposition). IP addresses are cheap. You do not need to share one and for the minimal cost involved it makes sense to have your own, just in case Google are examining IP addresses with the same question in mind that I highlight above.

On of my clients used to host their site at a local ISP on shared hosting.

The day I looked up the full list of sites hosted on that ip was the day I started planning for them to leave the ISP. You would not believe the kind of stuff that was on that server.

If *you* control the ip, then perhaps it's a little different, but shared hosting sucks from my PoV.
