How many people have cookies turned off?

Any current statistics?

There have been threads like this in the past, but none recent as far as I know. So I was wondering - are there any current statistics on how many visitors have cookies turned off? Obviously it will vary according to the topic of the site, but for my purposes an across-the-board statistic should be very helpful.

Commission Junction says 1% have cookies disabled, but they have a vested interest in stating the lowest percentage they possibly can... ;)

How many visitors have cookies turned off?

That is probably the metric I would not be looking at. I'd want to know how many users are dumping cookies in a certain time frame. Recent studies suggest as high as 43% of users are deleting cookies within a 30 day period.

Add to that the different types of cookies and it becomes a metrics nightmare. With all the Internet security software, cookies are becoming a major issue. Relying on cookies to track data may not be the best method these days.

Jupiter Research has a report available for this but you have to pay to get it. ;)

The debate over browser cookies continues to rage. Site operators' concerns are now turning to manual cookie deletion, with many users removing all cookies and preventing long-term analysis of visitors.

Key Questions

  • How frequently are consumers manually deleting cookies using their Web browser's cookie deletion functionality?

  • Which attitudes and behaviors drive cookie deletion?

  • What is the long-term prognosis for cookie-based systems?

Ever try surfing with your cookies turned off? There are quite a few things you cannot do without those cookies. ;)

I also noticed a cookie awareness even with less savvy users. It seems to be that a few of them really understand what they are for, but they most know that it's "bad and should be deleted". I've heard many to go as far equalling cookies to spyware.

Good information, pageone, but in this case I really do just need to know how many people have cookies disabled. If folks will let me set a cookie and leave it set for only three pageloads, that's all I need! ;)

I know the issue you broght up could be a concern for affiliate tracking and so forth, but I only need a cookie long enough to complete a very short checkout process.

So back to the question - are there any statistics on how many people outright disable cookies from being set?
