And how bad it feels when you face losing it

Once in a while it's good to get a reminder of how bad it would be to lose the data on your PC...

Today was the day that I got that reminder.

Switched on PC... Nothing!

3 hours later and I got the now dodgy hard drive to operate enough to shovel off the important data.

During the 3 hours all that was going through my mind was a list of all of the the things I did not have a recent back-up of. I was preparing myself for a 2 week recovery period! Ouch.

You can imagine the relief when I retrieved the data.

So, my advice is, back up now.

Couldn't agree with you more, inbound. Recovery is setback enough when you do have your backups let alone trying to scramble and recall everything you did since your last backup. I run an automated job every night as part of the disaster recovery plan. And don't forget to test that plan too! It takes some time, but well worth the effort when the day comes that you have to use it.

You can do backups with rsync even on windows. I have nightly backups scheduled for every night. I backup to a second HD. It's not the best, but it's better then nothing.
