redirect HTTP_HOST? question

Need help with domain alias redirect

I have come across something new to me. I am working on a client site who has 1 domain and hosting, but a second domain which is an alias pointing to the same hosting account.

While in discussion with the hosting company, they said that I need to set up a redirect so that anyone coming in on the main domain gets the main site, and anyone on the alias domain receives the second site (which is in a folder within the main site). I have searched the internet reading and scouring and I'm only more confused.

What do I need to implement - and how do I do it? Or does anyone know of a good resource so I can figure this out?

What serrver are you on? We have plenty of 'domain redirect' threads in Apache forum here, and a Microsoft forum as well, if you're on IIS.

Currently I'm on a Unix server. I have done a search within this site and found numerous postings on redirect, I have no idea where to start.

A lot of them that I see are a 'permanent' redirect directing 1 domain to another.

I appreciate any help you can give me.
