I'm a new webmaster and have set up my first website on a free hosting service to practice my html skills. Though, it appears the free host assigned me a very generic subdomain consisting of two letters and a number (www.AB#.yourfreehost.com).

This won't make the best impression with future visitors once I launch the site so I need to get my own domain name. Though, I'm wondering if there is any other way to pay for a domain name besides with a credit card, because I don't own one.

Would paypal be a safe alternative?

Are you sure PayPal still requires a credit card? I didn't see anything on the signup page.

The obvious solution is to get a credit card. If that's not an option for some reason, find a friend or relative with a credit card and ask him/her to pay for it and you reimburse the person with cash.

If the host takes paypal, it should be a perfectly good option. I've paid for my hosting and domain registration (also done through my host) by paypal. And, no, you don't have to have a credit card to use paypal. You do have to have some way to put money into your paypal account, but there are several possible ways to do that, which they'll explain if you want to sign up. One is to give them routing information for a bank account that the funds can be drawn from; if you want to be on the even safer side, you can set up a bank account where you keep only enough money to cover what you need for paypal, and give them the routing information for that one.
