Designing HTML email

I'm designing an email template for a client who wishes to foward it on monthly or so basis to a group of selected individuals.

They would like to see it as HTML email.

What are some basic guidelines for this type of work?
Is writing a simple and clean XHTML code and then placing it in the "insert HTML" dialog box in Thunderbird (for instance) sufficient or is there a more elaborate process behind it?

Again this is not a mass mailing campaign but I'm sure they would like everyone who is on their recepient list to recieve the email.
