Targeting a demographic with color

I heard from a work mate that there is apparently different colours/colors used depending on the web community. He was saying that the open source comunity like more pastel colours where as professional colors are more greys/grays reds and blues.

Does anyone know where this could be confirmed or have any input?

I don't know where it would be confirmed, but it certainly makes sense. At the very least, there could be a gender difference. The example your friend gave also sounds reasonable.
