Does anyone know how to overcome the New York Times preventing me from saving their Web pages as .mht (Web archive) files?

You could also view source - View > Page Source in Firefox - then save it as whatever you want.

The New York Times/NYT.com [nytimes.com] is judiciously conscientious about copyrights, trademarks, content, member areas, etc., so I don't think it's a good idea to consider circumventing or 'deactivating' any scripted or other safeguard -- if indeed any programming along those lines is in place.

Instead, I recommend going straight to the source and asking for Save As-related assistance via their "Member Center - Help Form [nytimes.com]." Good luck!
