We full-time webmasters we have limited interaction with real people (face to face). Some are satisfied with the interaction at places such as WW or other webmaster destinations. If you have a great idea and need to talk about it - who do you tell? Most of us are afraid to put our own URL in our WW profile because we enjoy not having people know all about us. We don't talk about great new concepts for fear of copycats.
If your traffic is all from organic SERPs and limited PPC - most of your daily activities won't become income producing until 2-6 months from now. Writing articles/blog posts, link building, building a new concept (programming, filling with content, links, etc).
I need a little kick and the butt and I know I'm not alone.
What do you fellow webmasters do to keep motivated? It can't be only about the checks (it used to be enough).
Is it the PubCons, SES, the contest of being on top of the SERPS, etc?
Also, what kind of goals do you others set? Is it all money based? Or are your goals more site oriented (link building goals, content/page count, etc)?
For me, I've always been an artist and a communicator, so that realm is what keeps me on top of my webmastering and development. My career history and college degrees are all computer science/mathematics based, but I wouldn't call myself a, "guru" or someone who (eats, sleeps, breathes) web development.
I really enjoy it; the sense of accomplishment (especially when coding) is gratifying; and seeing a project developed from the ground up, are all motivating factors in continuing to pursue goals.
While revenues are a part of the benefits package, I believe satisfaction with one's own work is what drives me (and probably most hardcore web developers) to continue, day in and day out.
