Shares in Pipex Communications surged as much as 8 percent on Monday, boosted by a report that larger rival BT Group was planning a 350 million-pound bid for the broadband provider.

Interesting - clearly they want the WiMAX licence that Pipex aquired, quite by accident, in an aquisition of their own back in 2002.

So how popular (or how widespread) is WiMax in the UK? Are all cities covered by service providers? What are the rates like?

It isn't yet. There are only two broadband spectrum WiMAX licences in the UK, Pipex has one (not sure who has the other).

Pipex have undergone tests (at a range of up to 2 miles I think it was), but nothing yet commercially available.
